The magical UK Christmas market that feels like a German village | Travel News | Travel

If you’re in the mood for a festive Christmas market that transports you to a charming German village without the need for extensive travel, why not pay a visit to this delightful wonderland right here in the UK?

The Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market, with its lively atmosphere and quaint chalet huts housing various stalls, is considered one of Europe’s finest.

There’s no need to endure long airport queues or tiresome journeys to get into the holiday spirit – it’s all right here.

Nestled within the historic grounds of the stunning Hampshire city, complete with paved streets and meandering streams, it’s an ideal location to embrace the festive season.

Whether you’re planning a day trip or considering an overnight stay, Winchester’s close proximity to Surrey makes it easily accessible by both train and car.

The enchanting market stays open until 8pm on Friday and Saturday nights, offering a beautiful shopping experience under the twinkling lights at dusk.

You’ll find a range of gifts, clothing and accessories, Christmas decorations, as well as food and drink.

During the rest of the week, the market is open until 6pm and entry is free. But the market isn’t just about Christmas shopping; there are also live performances on the community stage, featuring the Salvation Army and the Winchester Community Choir, reports Surrey Live

If Christmas markets aren’t enough and you still need to get that shopping fix, Winchester has a great selection of stores to splurge in. You can find Anthropologie, Jigsaw, a big Primark and The Hambledon department store.

After a day of exploring, why not hunker down in one of the many pubs tucked into Winchesters streets?

The Chesil Rectory, The William Walker and The Willow Tree come highly recommended for their quintessential English charm. For a unique dining experience, The Kyoto Kitchen offers delectable Japanese cuisine including sushi and sashimi dishes.

Forte Kitchen, with its stylish panelled walls and oversized lightbulbs, is touted as a great breakfast spot according to reviews. If you’re considering an overnight stay, lavish hotels such as The Old Vine, with its rustic wooden beams and panelled walls, or the luxurious Hotel Du Vin, known for its stunning interiors and freestanding baths in the bedrooms, are available at around £190 to £225 per night.

Those visiting by car are urged to make use of the Park and Ride car parks which are located around the outskirts of the city.

Winchester City Council operates an excellent and frequent service to all locations, with drop off points located 2-3 minutes walk from the Cathedral.

During late night openings, services for the Park and Ride are extended into the evenings.
