Google has given in to President Trump’s demands to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America on its mapping service.

The name change will be visible in the US but not in Mexico where the name will stay the same.

Outside of either country, users are expected to see both names.

Trump made the name change in a flurry of executive orders just hours after his inauguration as president. He also signed an order to change the name of the Alaskan mountain Denali to Mount McKinley.

Last week, a statement by the Interior Department said: “As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley.”

It added: “These changes reaffirm the Nation’s commitment to preserving the extraordinary heritage of the United States and ensuring that future generations of Americans celebrate the legacy of its heroes and historic assets.”

Trump recognised the former president McKinley who served between 1897 and 1901, in his inaugural address last week saying he “made our country very rich through tariffs and through talent – he was a natural businessman.”

McKinley led the country as it expanded its territory, gaining Guam, Puerto Rico and Hawaii as territories. Hawaii eventually became a US State.

The symbolism with Trump’s stated intentions is striking, with the newly-elected president expressing a desire to take control of Greenland and the Panama Canal whilst also indicating that he hoped to make Canada the 51^st US State.

Both countries have long coastlines along the gulf which is internationally recognised as The Gulf of Mexico and it is unlikely that this will cease to be the case.

The move has been labelled as “very silly” by Deep-sea ecologist Andrew Thaler who said that the name that has been used for more than four centuries would continue to be used by maritime professionals.

Thaler, founder of Blackbeard Biologic Science and Environmental Advisors said: “The Gulf of Mexico, however, is a body of water that borders several countries and includes pockets of high seas.

“There really isn’t any precedent for a US president renaming international geologic and oceanographic features. Any attempt to rename the entire Gulf of Mexico would be entirely symbolic.”
